Wasps get a bad reputation IMO. Like, sure there are species that are generally assholes, even when away from the nest. And yeah, nests can be hard to spot sometimes; especially for subterranian species. But honestly just finding a lone wasp in the wild? They're about as chill as bees. Hell, there's a bald-face hornet that visits my yard & hunts flies. Which technically isn't a hornet at all, but a type of yellowjacket. But she's super chill.
And that's just the eusocial wasps! There are a good number of solitary wasps that legit just hang out. Hell, a majority of wasp species are solitary. Some wasps don't even have stingers!
Adult wasps of any kind feed primarily, if not exclusively, on nectar. Not counting a few omnivorous species. They are just as important of pollinators as bees & butterflies. The hunting they do is for their carnivorous larvae. Often parasitic in nature. It seems horrific, but they're great population control for many agricultural pests.
There's well over a hundred thousand species! A good handful of them are for tropical figs. Like just evolved with the trees. That's wild.
I dunno I just think wasps are neat and more people should look into them. I'm not saying walk up to your local nest, but like browse wikipedia. Fascinating stuff.
I just think they're neat. :o)
All that being said, saying the word "wasps" out loud is a nightmare. And I don't even have a lisp!
