Thinking about body horror lately... I like blood, guts, & muscle as much as the next guy, but skin is such an untapped well of potential for horror. I've seen it stretched unnaturally taught, and even loose. Things being under the skin always made me squirm. But I'm talking more about it's natural state. Like, that shit's got layers. Pores. Folicles. Like weird, rubbery lasagna.
Ok that was a cursed sentence: Skin is like weird, rubbery lasagna.
But what about when it's irritated? The veins expand, flushing the area. Layers peeled back when scraped. Blisters form with too much friction. Pimples are it's own ick. Anything with pus or fluid buildup, honestly. Scarring, scabs, and god the pores in general. All normal shit that happens. Also sunburn, when you shed skin rapidly? Sick as hell.
That's not even touching injuries, infections, and diseases. Necrosis alone is a terrifying thing. Even something seemingly benign like a bug bite or a rash. What about an abundance of skin mites? Yeah they're supposed to be there, but sometimes their populations flare up. It's fascinating to think & learn about.
I almost want to see something that takes place on human skin. Like you're the size of a skin mite. Trekking across different levels of irritation. Perhaps on someone comatose, so they're still? You gingerly step around each pore, climb bumps like hills, duck under skin tags & hair as if they're trees. Treading lightly around pustules & rashes, and taking shelter from the deluge of a sponge bath. Maybe they could ride on top of skin mites, like weird cowboys?
Honestly, at this point, I'm just brainstorming. Someone else with more knowledge on this stuff could make this. Perhaps a dermatologist, or someone that studied the field. Maybe somewhere out there is a microbiologist & dermatologist that'll work together with either a writer, filmmaker, or illustrator to make something like this? Or just somebody very passionate about this stuff that learned indipendently. Whatever, you don't gotta be qualified to make horror about skin.
If that ever happens, or has already happened, please let me know! I'd love to take a peek.
